Jacques Bruwer’s journey into the world of design began in the intimate workshops of his grandfather and father, where he was welcomed as a child and introduced to the timeless artistry of carpentry and metal fabrication. Amidst the scent of sawdust and the hum of machinery, he spent his formative years playing, learning, and creating in the backdrop of their craftsmanship. This early immersion in object making ignited a profound passion for design and artisanal skill within him.
While pursuing his studies in Fine Art at Stellenbosch University, specializing in Sculpture and Photography, his innate connection to furniture and object making continued to flourish. It became evident that his true calling lay in the realm of furniture design, where he sought to refine and expand upon his creative language and technical abilities.
Following his academic endeavors, he embarked on a professional journey at a local design studio and gallery. There, he delved into the intricacies of the trade and the business of showcasing and selling designer furniture and objects. Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle of commerce, he found himself yearning for the hands-on process of creation the nostalgic allure of his days spent in the workshops of his forebears.
This longing birthed Studio Bruwer—a manifestation of a deep-seated love for craftsmanship and the art of object making that has been ingrained in Bruwer from birth. At Studio Bruwer, we espouse a philosophy rooted in reverence for materials and a commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices. Our mission is simple yet profound: to craft enduring pieces of exceptional quality that defy disposability, ensuring that our creations stand the test of time rather than contributing to the waste of landfills.
Welcome to Studio Bruwer, where every piece is imbued with a legacy of craftsmanship, passion, and a dedication to sustainability.
